?9 essay composing tips to ‘wow’ college admissions officers
You’ve taken the tests, requested the recommendations, completed the regular application, and now it is finally time to refocus on what you’ve been putting off: the essay.
Even when most students spend days, usually weeks, perfecting their personal statements, admissions officers only spend about three to 5 minutes actually reading them, according to Jim Rawlins, director of admissions for the University of Oregon.
Higher school seniors are faced with the challenge of summarizing the last 17 years into 600 words, all despite the fact that showcasing their “unique” personality against thousands of other candidates.
“It’s hard to notice a balance in between sounding professional and smart without employing all of those longer words,” says Lily Klass, a senior at Milford Very high School in Milford, Mass. “I’m having trouble reflect myself without sounding arrogant or rude or anything like that.”

1. Open with the anecdote.

“It’s less about the topic plus more about how you frame it and what you need to say about it, Robinson says. “The much better essay is has the best interesting thing to say, regardless of the topic that involves a crisis or the mundane.”
